The summary

Cartridge adhesive that sets underwater, for rocks, decorations and corals

This Orca adhesive from Aquarium Münster can be applied underwater, in a filled aquarium or pond: you can fix a rock, a piece of decor or a coral in place without emptying the tank, and you can also seal a leak as an emergency repair. It comes in a 450 g cartridge, in black, and its formula contains no solvent, isocyanate or silicone, which makes it safe for fish and plants once cured.

🪨 Bonding a rock underwater

Steadying a stack of stones, fixing a decorative rock that tips over, securing an artificial module or a root that floats up: this is the main use of this adhesive. In a pond as in an aquarium, these adjustments almost always happen after the fact, once the water is in place and the weak points of the layout have appeared. You can then step in without dismantling or draining anything, and correct the layout as you go rather than starting over. In a reef aquarium, the same adhesive is used to fix coral cuttings and live rock to their base.

Build a rock scape with rocks glued together underwater

Dragon stone for aquariums is well suited to this work, because its surface, pitted with cavities, offers plenty of points of purchase for the glue. You assemble the stack dry to find the balance, place it in the tank, then glue the joints underwater without having to take it apart. The decoration thus stays in place even when you clean the substrate or move a plant.

A leak sealed underwater remains a temporary fix

Orca glue can plug a leak without draining the tank, which gives you time to organise a proper repair. A glass seal that has given way should, however, be redone with the tank dry, using an aquarium-grade silicone applied to clean, degreased glass, as it is this seal that durably holds back the water pressure on the glass.

💦 Media and how to prepare them

It bonds to most of the materials found in an aquascape: rock, stone, root, ceramic, coral and many plastics. How well it grips depends above all on the condition of the surface, since a surface covered in a film of algae or a greasy deposit gives the glue nothing to hold on to. So scrub the contact areas with a stiff brush before applying, even underwater, and let the loose particles disperse. On a smooth material, or on a plastic whose nature you do not know, first run a test on a spare piece, which saves you from having to redo a whole assembly.

Brush the contacts

Do this underwater too, because a film of algae prevents any adhesion, even on stone.

Work in small batches

Several dabs of glue hold better than a continuous bead that traps water.

Hold it perfectly still

Wedge the part in place while it takes hold, with a stone or a support, rather than holding it by hand.

Leave to harden before use

Wait for it to cure fully before reconnecting power or putting any weight on the assembly.

🔧 Applying it with a spray gun

The 450 g cartridge fits a standard cartridge gun, the same as for DIY sealant. Cut the nozzle at an angle to the width of bead you want, bring the tip up to the brushed area, then apply the adhesive in spots by squeezing the trigger. The piece is then placed onto the adhesive and pressed firmly, to push the water out of the joint and make contact. Since the adhesive remains visible on a light-coloured layout, the black shade is best chosen for dark rocks or for joins placed at the back of the layout, where it blends into the shadow.

🐟 A neutral adhesive for the tank

Its solvent-free, isocyanate-free and silicone-free formula releases nothing into the water once cured, and it withstands permanent immersion in the presence of fish, plants and corals. Once set, it reaches a hardness above 56 Shore A, that of firm rubber, so the assembly holds without becoming brittle. During application, wear gloves, as the product may cause an allergic reaction on contact with the skin in sensitive people. Also keep your curious fish away from the fresh adhesive while it sets.

🧩 A stable decoration for aquaponics

In a tank housing aquaponic fish, stable decor is a matter of safety as much as looks. A stone that tips over can jam a pond pump, block a strainer or injure a fish, and a pile that collapses stirs the debris on the bottom back into suspension, which clouds the water in the tank. The glue is particularly well suited to low-flow areas, where the assembly does not have to withstand a constant push. The guide to building your aquaponic system helps you plan the position of the pump, decor and calm zones right from the design stage of the tank.
