Water at the right temperature, with no risk of burning the fish
An aquarium heater keeps the water at the chosen temperature day and night, whatever the temperature of the room. The JBL ProTemp S can be set from 20 to 34 °C, accurate to ± 0.5 °C, and adds 2 safety features to this function. A plastic guard surrounds the glass tube and stops your fish from pressing against the hot surface. A thermal cut-out switches off the heating if the unit finds itself out of the water. It is available in 6 power ratings, from 25 to 300 W, for aquariums of up to 400 litres.
🌡️ Simple, monitored control
The temperature is set with a large graduated dial, and an indicator light comes on when the unit is heating. The tube is made of safety quartz glass, highly impact-resistant, and the unit is fully waterproof: you can submerge it to a depth of 1 m and position it vertically, which makes the indicator light easier to read, but also at an angle or horizontally near the bottom. Its diameter is 29 mm, 33 mm with the guard, and its cable is 1.95 m long.
The power is chosen according to the volume of water and the difference between the room temperature and the temperature you are aiming for. The 25 W suits up to 50 litres, the 50 W up to 80 litres, the 100 W up to 160 litres, the 150 W up to 200 litres, the 200 W up to 300 litres and the 300 W up to 400 litres. In a cool room, choose the next power up, as the temperature reached also depends on this difference. The length is 210 mm for the 25 and 50 W, 275 mm for the 100 and 150 W, and 375 mm for the 200 and 300 W, guard not included.
A dry-break coupling is no substitute for unplugging
The thermal cut-out switches off the heating if the water level drops, but it is not a safety device you should rely on. Always unplug the heater before lowering the level for a water change or cleaning, and keep the unit submerged at least up to the "min. water level" mark. Never push it into the substrate of the tank.
🔧 Installing and checking
Assemble the guard, slide the heater into it, choose the temperature on the dial, then fix the unit to the glass with its suction cups, in an area where the water circulates well, near the filter outlet. Wait 10 to 15 minutes before plugging it in, so that the thermostat can reach the water temperature. Take a 120-litre aquarium in a living room at 19 °C, which you want to keep at 25 °C: the 100 W ProTemp S covers this volume, and the 150 W model gives you some margin if the room gets colder in winter.
A thermometer to check the setting
After 24 to 48 hours of operation, the temperature selected on the dial and the water temperature may differ by 1 or 2 °C. A JBL suction-cup aquarium thermometer, placed at the opposite end from the heater, gives you the true reading. If the water is too cold, raise the setting by 1 to 2 °C, wait about 12 hours, then check again.
🛡️ Large tanks, maintenance and warranty
For a tank of more than 200 litres, 2 heaters placed at opposite ends distribute the heat better than a single unit, and one carries on heating if the other fails. For a large aquarium where you would rather keep the view unobstructed, the JBL ProTemp e external heater, fitted on the filter pipe, is the other solution. In hard water, limescale builds up over time on the tube and the guard: soak them overnight in an aquarium descaler, rinse with clean water, then put them back in place.
JBL guarantees the ProTemp S for 2 years from the date of purchase, and extends this guarantee to 4 years if you register the device on its website within the first 2 years. Broken glass and a damaged cable are excluded from the guarantee. The cable cannot be replaced: if it is damaged, the device must no longer be used and should be disposed of with electrical equipment, not with household waste.
🌱 In aquaponics
The fish side of most aquaponic systems runs in cold or temperate water, without heating. A ProTemp S finds its place in a small indoor system stocked with a species that needs warmer water, such as tilapia: the temperature then governs the fish's appetite, the activity of the filter bacteria and therefore the nutrients available to your plants. The guide to raising tilapia in aquaponics gives the temperature and volume that suit them.
