The summary

  • What you receive: a tower with 4 tubes drilled with 36 planting sites, complete with its pump, net cups and germination sponges.
  • The space it takes up: 95 cm long on the floor, one metre tall, against a wall or in a corner.
  • What you can grow in it: lettuces, herbs and leafy vegetables, which are cut and replaced.
  • How to choose: compared to the aluminium channels on the shelf, this tower scores on space and price.

Four stacked food-grade PVC tubes, for lettuces, herbs and leafy vegetables.

NFT runs a thin film of nutrient solution just a few millimetres deep along the bottom of an angled tube. The roots dip into this film from below and breathe freely in the air above, with no grow medium around them. This kit stacks four tubes, drilled with a total of 36 growing sites, and comes with the pump that feeds the top tube.

💧 The trickle of water and its tank

The pump draws from the reservoir tank and pushes water up to the top of the tower. The water travels along the uppermost tube, drops into the next one, and so on until it returns to the tank. There is therefore no water stored in the tubes themselves: what they contain is a thin film, and that film disappears within a few minutes the moment the pump stops. This is the fundamental difference from a self-watering pot with a reservoir, and it governs everything else about how the system works.

Two simple habits follow from this constraint. Your pump runs continuously, day and night, because a stoppage of a few hours means dry roots. And the reservoir tank should be large enough that its level never becomes critical between refills, since it alone holds the entire growing volume. A one-metre tower positions this tank on the floor, beneath the structure, where it remains accessible without dismantling anything. A capacity of 30 to 50 litres is a good starting point for 36 growing sites; a smaller volume means topping up every 2 days at peak season, and makes every pH correction a sharp one.

🥬 What grows in a tube

Lettuces and herbs

They occupy their position for three to five weeks, then free it up. That is precisely the growing cycle a tube tower is designed for.

Leafy vegetables

Spinach, cut-and-come-again chard, mesclun: you harvest leaf by leaf and the plant stays in place for several more weeks.

What won't hold

A tomato or cucumber develops a root mass and weight that neither this tube nor a one-metre tower can support.

Entry-level plants

They arrive already rooted, in a germination plug or cube, never as bare seeds placed loose in the basket.

A dry-run pump is destroyed in a single night

The reservoir empties faster than you might expect, especially once the plants reach full size and the room warms up. A submersible pump running dry will overheat and fail, and you lose the pump on top of the crop. Check the reservoir level every time you walk past the tower, and top it up before it drops below the strainer.

The solution is prepared in the reservoir

All 36 plants draw from the same water, which is prepared in one place, the reservoir sitting beneath the structure. Pick up a complete hydroponic nutrient solution and a liquid pH test kit at the same time: a correctly balanced solution from the very first fill saves you from the deficiencies that only show up in week three, once the tower is fully established. Without these two items, you are simply circulating plain water through four tubes. Clay pebbles anchor the plugs in the baskets and can be reused from one batch to the next.

🐟 Connecting the tower to a pond

NFT tolerates poorly the suspended solids load of fish tank water. Particles settle at the bottom of the tube, thicken the film, and then block the junctions between levels. If you feed this tower from a pond, mechanical filtration upstream is a basic operating requirement. The rest of the installation remains unchanged: same pump, same gradient, same baskets. What you gain in return is water that already carries its nitrates, meaning a nutrition to top up rather than build from scratch, with particular attention to iron and potassium, which pond water tends to supply poorly. The pH range also shifts, as a stocked pond typically sits at around 6.8 to protect the fish and bacteria, at the cost of slightly reduced availability of certain elements for the plants.

🧹 Maintenance between two batches

Between cycles, the tubes are dismantled and rinsed under clean water with the lids open. What you are looking for is the slippery biofilm that forms along the bottom of the channel and traps particles during the next cycle. Used germination sponges are discarded; the baskets are rinsed and reused. Allow a good hour for all four tubes, and take the opportunity to empty the tank and scrub its walls, as deposits start there. The pump strainer should be rinsed at the same time, a partially blocked filter reduces flow well before the mesh looks visibly clogged.

🧪 pH and nutrition

With no grow medium to act as a buffer, the solution changes quickly and should be corrected to 5.8–6.2, the range in which nutrients remain available. Test once a week in an established system, every 2 days during the early stages, and always from the reservoir rather than a tube, a sample taken there is representative of the whole circuit. Renew the solution entirely every two to three weeks, topping up with plain water in between to compensate for evaporation. If conductivity rises while the level drops, your plants are drinking more than they're eating, and plain water will correct this better than adding more fertiliser.

📐 Assembly and footprint

The tower occupies less than half a square metre of floor space and requires height above all, with the tank sliding under the structure. The slope of the tubes is set during assembly and kept shallow, a few millimetres per metre is enough to maintain the film flow without it pooling at the bottom of the channel. Pay equal attention to the lateral level; a tube tilted to one side will leave the opposite edge dry and therefore a few positions on each row without water. Also allow access on one side to open the tank, take readings and top up without moving the whole unit, and ensure a reliable power socket is nearby for the pump. Assembly itself is done dry, then a first fill with plain water, with the pump running for an hour, checks the joints for leaks and verifies even flow across all four levels before a single plant goes into a pot.

Five ways to run a water film

The table brings together two PVC tube towers and three aluminium channel tables. It compares capacity, channel type, and floor space.

Are you deciding between a tower and a table? A tower takes up a metre of wall and grows upwards; a table takes up two metres and stays low. Your room makes the decision first, before the number of planting spaces.
