Solar drip irrigation with twelve cycles, for fifteen watering points.

This kit waters 15 points with no mains power and no tap connection. A solar panel powers a small pump that draws from a reservoir of your choice and feeds water into a 15 m pipe, branched via T-fittings to 15 individually adjustable drippers.

☀️ The panel and the battery

The system is split into two modules, which is what makes it suitable for almost any location. The 6 V, 2 W panel goes wherever the sun falls, facing south for the UK, clear of shadows from trees or walls. The timer-pump unit sits beside the reservoir, which can remain in the shade, with a cable connecting the two. The built-in 1,800 mAh battery stores charge from sunny days and keeps the system running when the sky clouds over, so it's the battery, not the panel, that determines real-world autonomy. Charge it for 4 to 6 hours in sunlight before the very first cycle; without this, the first watering will be shorter than expected and you may think there's a settings fault.

⏱️ Twelve pre-set cycles

Each programme combines a watering duration and an interval between cycles. Short, frequent cycles suit seedlings and cuttings, whose grow medium should never dry out completely, while long, widely spaced cycles suit Mediterranean plants, which prefer infrequent but deep watering. Most herbs and balcony vegetables fall somewhere in between. Individual adjustment of each dripper does the rest, since within the same cycle a tomato receives more water than a lavender. It is this combination, one shared cycle and 15 separate flow rates, that makes a single network compatible with plants whose requirements are quite different.

Clear water

Sediment from a rainwater collector blocks a dripper far faster than you might expect.

The filter, every 2 to 3 weeks

It lifts out of the tank and rinses clean. That's the number one maintenance step.

The pipe without sharp bends

A sharp kink restricts flow along the entire line, not just beyond the kink itself.

Overwintering indoors

The lithium battery does not take well to prolonged frost, and the module should be brought indoors out of season.

A 2-day trial run before you leave

Before you leave, run the kit for 2 days on the chosen cycle and measure how much the reservoir has lost, you will then know exactly how many days it will last. This trial run is worth more than any calculation, as evaporation, temperature and sunlight can easily double real consumption. Use the time to adjust each dripper, checking the moisture level in each pot on the morning of the third day.

It is not designed for an open-ground vegetable plot

Fifteen drippers and a pump of this size cover pots, window boxes, a balcony, a small greenhouse or a flower bed. Beyond around ten square metres of open ground, you will need several kits or a mains-powered system, as the available pressure will not keep up. Count your watering points before ordering, adding up the pots you actually intend to connect rather than those you own. For an open-ground bed, a buried irrigation jar is better suited to the task, with no electronics or pipe required.

🧹 The filter, a wear part

Three safety features accompany normal operation. An anti-siphon valve prevents water from flowing back into the pump when it stops, a filter protects the circuit from sediment, and an audible alarm sounds when the reservoir runs dry or the filter becomes blocked. This filter is the only component that requires regular attention, and a dripper delivering less than its neighbours almost always indicates a blocked filter rather than a fault with the dripper itself. Remove it, rinse it under plain water, and refit it without forcing. The audible alarm is triggered by the same two causes, an empty reservoir or a blocked filter, and it is worth checking the latter before concluding it is the former. A completely blocked dripper can be cleared by removing it and blowing through it, which is sufficient in most cases.

🪣 Choosing the reservoir

The kit is supplied without a reservoir, leaving you free to choose the volume based on how long you'll be away. A 20-litre bucket is sufficient for a weekend away with a few pots, while a 100-litre garden bin or a rainwater collector will last two to three weeks on a well-configured terrace. Place the reservoir in the shade to minimise evaporation and algae growth, keep it covered, and raise it slightly if you want to reduce the strain on the pump. Rainwater works perfectly well, provided you filter out leaves before they enter the reservoir rather than at the pump itself. On a balcony where the reservoir takes up too much space, clay spikes placed in the most demanding pots can take the pressure off the kit by bridging the gap between two watering cycles.

🔩 Installing the network

Unroll the line before making any connections, laying it flat in the sun for half an hour so the pipe loses the memory of its coil and sits without twisting. Then work from the reservoir towards the furthest point, inserting a dripper at each pot, cutting the pipe as you go rather than measuring out lengths in advance. Each tee fitting creates a branch, and the order in which you place them makes almost no difference to the flow rate as long as the line does not loop back on itself. Finally, secure the pipe to the ground or along the planter with clips, because a line that shifts will eventually pull a dripper free, and all the water will then flow out at that one point, leaving the rest dry. Check the entire line on the first cycle, dripper by dripper, rather than trusting the installation.

❄️ Winter storage

Bring the electronic module and its battery indoors at the first sign of frost: a lithium battery handles prolonged cold poorly and loses capacity permanently if it freezes flat. Empty the pipe and drippers before storing them by lifting the line from one end to the other, as any water left inside a dripper will split it when it freezes. Charge the battery to half capacity before putting it away rather than leaving it empty all winter, and give it a few hours in the sun before the first use in spring. Our article on oyas throughout the season places this kit in context alongside other ways of watering while you're away.
