The set includes six germination trays, 72 cells, and each tray has its own lamp. This is what allows you to sow in January in a room that never receives direct sunlight, without relying on a well-positioned window or moving your trays around throughout the day.

💡 What light changes

A seed germinates in the dark, whereas a seedling needs light as soon as it emerges. Deprived of light, it etiolates: the stem stretches, turns pale and eventually collapses, and the plant cannot be rescued at transplanting. This is the number one fault with winter seedlings, and it has nothing to do with temperature, which explains why many gardeners spend a long time looking at their heating as the culprit. The lamp on each tray combines red, blue and white, the wavelengths the plant uses to green up and grow upright.

This setting acts as a supplement, when the room already receives some natural light during part of the day.

This is the standard setting for a bright room, but without direct sunlight on the surface.

12 hours

This cycle recreates a full day, for winter seedlings in a dark room.

The cycle is set once and repeats at the same time every day without any further thought on your part. That is what makes these trays useful in a room you do not visit every day, as your seedlings maintain their rhythm in your absence. The setting is chosen according to the light the room already receives, not the species being sown, most spring vegetables are perfectly happy with around twelve hours in total.

The background heat beneath the lamp

The lamp provides the light a seedling needs from the moment it emerges, whereas germination itself depends on the temperature of the grow medium. In a room that is both dark and cold, a heat mat slid under the trays adds warmth to complement the light, and it is the combination of both that produces consistent winter seedlings. Fill the cells with germination pods, which can be transplanted whole.

The lamp you leave on

A lamp left on for 24 hours a day accelerates nothing, which is precisely why the timer is capped at 12 hours. Do also make a habit of venting the dome gradually from germination onwards, as a closed, lit tray heats up faster than a closed tray in the dark. And measure the available height before ordering, since 17,4 cm will not fit under every shelf.

📏 The height of the lamp

The lamp adjusts in height, and that adjustment needs revisiting as your seedlings grow. Too low, and the light becomes too harsh for young leaves; too high, and the stem starts stretching towards it again. The whole unit stands 17.4 cm lamp included, which calls for a clear surface rather than a low shelf. Each tray measures 19 by 15 cm and is made from BPA-free PVC. Get into the habit of checking the distance every time you water, as a week is all it takes for a tray of tomatoes to close the gap.

🌙 The night rest period

The alternation between light and darkness is not simply a matter of saving energy, it is part of how the plant functions. Much of the respiration and migration of sugars towards the roots takes place during the dark period, and a seedling kept under continuous light develops a weaker root system beneath foliage that may otherwise look perfectly healthy. The problem only becomes apparent at transplanting, when the root ball falls apart. Set the timer to a proper cycle and let it do its job, rather than adding extra hours on days when your seedlings seem slow. A slow seedling in January is almost always one that lacks warmth at the grow medium level, not light.
